Pangea signs the Boston Declaration
Pangaea Supports the Boston Declaration
Pangea is proud to support the Boston Declaration with three pledges focusing on delivery of educational seminars with a strong emphasis on Neurosurgery, Neurotrauma and Biomedical Engineering across Africa and the Asia Pacific region and the production of an open access neurosurgical nursing textbook with applicability to low and middle income settings – “The Pocket Textbook of Global Neurosurgical Nursing”.
What is the Boston Declaration?
The Boston Declaration brought together 500+ global neurosurgery leaders on April 24, 2025 to address persistent challenges in global neurosurgery, including siloed models of engagement. It aims to improve access to safe, timely, and affordable neurosurgical care by unifying a wide range of stakeholders – clinicians, academics, industry leaders, policymakers, and patient advocates – through specific, measurable, and actionable pledges.
The Declaration builds upon the 2016 Bogotá Declaration and 2024 Peshawar Statement and seeks to foster equitable partnerships, empower leadership from low- and middle-income countries, and create sustainable, locally-led healthcare solutions. The event was structured into five thematic sessions: Challenges, Paradigms, Milieu/Support Pillars, Champions, and Community/Neurosurgical Societies, each designed to explore the current landscape, innovations, and systemic barriers to equitable global neurosurgical care and education. The initiative culminated in an event where over 90 pledges were presented and will be monitored for progress at one, three, and five-year intervals to ensure follow-through. The day concluded with a digital signing of the Boston Declaration document, symbolizing a collective commitment to address the substantial and persistent needs for global access to neurosurgical care and education.
The signatories bring together a diverse coalition of stakeholders, which are central to its mission:
- Stakeholder Groups: The Declaration engaged a wide range of groups beyond the clinical workforce, including academic institutions, government and non-governmental organizations (including Pangea), industry partners, patient advocates, and philanthropists.
- Major Neurosurgical Societies: A broad representation from every continent, including the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS), the European Association of Neurological Surgeons (EANS), the Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS), the World Federation of Neurological Surgeons (WFNS), the Asian Australasian Society of Neurological Surgeons (AASNS), the Continental Association of African Neurosurgical Societies (CAANS), and the Latin American Federation of Neurosurgical Societies (FLANC).

The defining image of the Boston Declaration is one of building a new, coordinated framework for global neurosurgery – one “rooted in collective action, and sustained by community and consistent reflection.” It is a paradigm shift from siloed, fragmented efforts to a unified, collaborative, and actionable global movement dedicated to advancing neurosurgical care worldwide.
